Acquiring new, truly seasonal pieces is akin to embarking on a summer fling. Both usually begin with the expectation of a brief yet passionate affair. All fireworks and fleeting infatuation tainted only by the looming use by date as the season draws to an end.
As the new season dawns, so too does the understanding that the rose tinted, lighthearted affair we’ve relished must finally give way to the cold reality of winter. So poignant is this feeling it even inspired Lana Del Rey to write ‘Summertime Sadness’, dedicated to the emptiness associated with this inevitable change of season. Maybe she was desperately holding onto the love of another or maybe the somber mood was triggered by the red dress she references in the opening verse. Either way, I’m sure you can relate.
As we feel the icy holds of winter creep in, traditionally its our light weight, carefree summer pieces that will find their way out of high rotation, discarded to the back of the wardrobe, bottom of the draw or donated to charity in order to make room for the deliciously warm knits, thermal woolen coats, chunky boots and thick toastie socks to see us through the coldest of days.
This season we are seeing a shift in seasonal outfitting. Instead of embracing single purpose distinctively different summer and winter wardrobes, we are seeing a new form of layering, inspiring us to commit to our summer pieces by layering them over our weather appropriate wares.
It’s easy! Want to wear your favourite slinky cami in sub zero temperature? Try pairing it back with a turtleneck and your favourite jeans. What about your summer staple slip dress? Why not pile it on over a thick pair of opaque tights and a long sleeve tee? Are you desperately holding onto those gorgeous open-toed mules? Team them with some cable knit socks and you’re out the door.
Our love of summer pieces need not die with the season. This winter the chicest way to layer is inside out. Keep your slinkiest, strappiest pieces on the outside with your hearty winter warmers underneath.
Whether this new approach to dressing is driven by our trend-obsessed culture, fueled by the need to wear international and seasonally opposite trends in ‘real time’ or by our ever growing consumer conscience, tiring of endless consumerism and trend churning, leaving us ready to commit long term to our most prized pieces. There has never been a better time to layer. No post summer melancholy necessary.
