WGSN CLOSE-TO-SEASON SS13: Accessories & Footwear Key Themes

The WGSN Close to Season presentation for S/S 13 at the Australian Shoe Fair looked at the key trends to emerge from the international runways and their impact on the accessories and footwear market.

The presentation covered the season’s Key Messages / Key Looks / Colour / Fabric / Print and Pattern and Knitwear.

Last issue we covered the key colours, this edition we look at the Key Looks and themes for SS13.

– Clean modern shapes
– Unexpected fabrications
– White with brights
– Luxe basics

Let’s start with that sportswear trend we’ve been talking about “Sports Couture”. This is where we see those clean modern shapes in those unexpected fabrications with a strong palette defined by white with brights.

Functional sportswear influences update looks we are already seeing for autumn/winter but looking really new in white. Sports mesh textures are key – especially when contrasted with clear acrylic for that block heeled shoe at the top there ….. And bold colour works as an accent to those sporty brights.

Chunky block heels … colour blocking ….. Hidden wedges and sports profiles aas well as loafer updates – I love the clear spotted fringed tongue there at the top.

– Authentic American sports
– XXL styling
– Varsity updates
– Performance fabrics
– Reworked classics

The sportswear influences are also impacting on the menswear market where inspiration is taken from authentic American sports like Baseball and basketball.

These primary bright hi-tops have spliced and panelled sections which feel very 80s. For a more commercial direction we have the slick blacks working for hi-tops in rubberised and perforated finishes.

The glitz of the look translates to footwear with gold hardware. Look at the pointed toes and stiletto heels which reinforce the 80s style. I love the gold ankle chains on the boots in the middle image.

For Boudoir Grunge we see the return of feminine dressing – it’s a new look with it’s roots in early 90s grunge as we look to Marc Jacobs 20th anniversary of showing his seminal grunge collection.

With this, the trend has slightly subversive elements with the ongoing mood for masculine influences and androgyny which we have had for the past few seasons

– Feminine
– 90s grunge
– Subversive
– Seductive
– Masculine influences

The Pretty Gritty grunge girl look sees the continuation of floral DMs and brothel creepers.

This is where we’d see mirrored metallics – note the new block heel/ pointed toe combo and the higher-cut back – all key details for next summer’s footwear.

There’s something slightly subversive about some of the Boudoir Grunge accessories with chains and pearls and embellished transparencies cmbined with faux nude patents.

Onto our Menswear trends now and Preppy Resort – this is a perennail trend for menswear but has real resonance for next summer where colour is so important.

– Clean styling
– Preppy update
– Functional
– Streamlined
– Colourful brights

The ongoing loafer – reecolored in white – the red trimmed desert boot and the casual suede yachting pump.

A quiet Zen-like trend based on the simplicity of the traditional kimono. Colour too has a quiet quality and we can expect to see the trend have a big impact on next summer’s print and pattern.

– East-meets-West
– Zen-like
– Cool greens & blues
– Kimono dressing
– Japonesque prints

And from the key new looks and trend directions for next summer, we now move onto to main trend updates. As we know trends are slowing down and are staying around a lot longer – but they are still an important part of the season’s landscape.

– Early 60s looks
– Futuristic
– Graphic
– Transitional
– Junior

Our 1st trend update is called 60s Modernist and draws it’s inspiration from early 60s influences, particularly designers like Mary Quant. Its quite futuristic in feel and has a really strong graphic feel, through both colour and pattern, making it a key look for transitional deliveries.

Playful spots and graphics are key to update the 60s looks which we have had around for the past 2 seasons.

60s accessories were a huge trend on the runway – with the new pointed toes and lower heels making this a really commercial option ad.

– Modern shapes
Technical fabrics
– Camouflage prints
– 90s utility
– Military/safari update

This updates the perennial safari / military styling – adding some 90s utility looks into the mix, along with technical fabrics and revamped camouflage prints – a huge print trend for menswear next summer.

Expect to see the look translate to accessories with camo prints udating everything from baseball caps to casual footwear

– 70s influences
– West Coast
– Western influences
– Festival dressing
– Folkloric

California Dreaming is inspired by laid back West Coast living and draws on the early 70s for inspiration. We see it as an update trend for junior Festival dressing – so a key look for high summer – incorporating western and folkloric influences along the way.

Think warm earthy coloured suede and leather – lots of patchwork bags and fringed trims – along with the gladiator sandal – did it ever really go away ?
